Job Summary
Are you an experienced material handler with yard switching and forklift experience? We're seeking a dependable and safety-focused
Switcher (Yard Dog)
to join our team in Byron Center, MI. In this role, you'll be responsible for trailer movement, shipping support, inventory coordination, and material handling while ensuring safe and efficient warehouse and yard operations.
What You'll Be Doing
As a Switcher (Yard Dog), your core responsibilities will include:
- Safely moving trailers to and from parking lots and loading docks.
- Maintaining trailer inventory, including tracking loaded, empty, and storage trailers, and updating trailer boards at the driver center.
- Operating forklifts/Hilos safely and efficiently.
- Picking, wrapping, staging, and loading orders for shipment.
- Packaging materials according to customer shipping requirements.
- Loading finished product onto trailers for shipping.
- Completing required production, shipping, and quality records accurately and in a timely manner.
- Ensuring shipping records are submitted to supervisors promptly.
- Maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
- Following all company safety procedures and shipping requirements.
What We're Looking For
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) preferred.
- Prior experience or training driving a switcher truck and backing trailers into loading docks.
- Forklift experience required.
- Ability to push, pull, and/or lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand, walk, kneel, squat, climb steps or ladders, and perform repetitive movements throughout the shift.
- Ability to work in varying temperatures and warehouse/yard environments.
Skills:
- Yard Switching Knowledge: Ability to safely maneuver trailers and coordinate trailer movement efficiently.
- Forklift Operation: Experience safely operating forklifts/Hilos in warehouse and yard environments.
- Communication Skills: Ability to communicate clearly and provide timely information to supervisors and team members.
- Basic Math Skills: Ability to read tape measures and perform basic calculations accurately.
- Computer Skills: Basic computer knowledge for data entry, searches, and shipping documentation.
- Attention to Detail: Ability to complete shipping and quality records neatly, accurately, and legibly.
- Document Interpretation: Ability to read and interpret shipping documents and production instructions.
