What You Should Be Doing on Your First Day of Your New Job

09.11.19 | Professional Development

As your first day at a new job approaches, the predictable feelings will all roll through. You’re excited for the new opportunity but nervous about the transition. A different company with different people can be daunting and who knows what your first day will entail. Instead of focusing on what you don’t know, here’s how to prepare yourself for what you should be doing your first day.

1. Keep the focus on relationships

Whether you’re starting in a supervisory role or not, it can be tempting to put the focus completely on your goals and the work that needs to be done instead of getting to know your new co-workers. Keep the focus of your first day on getting to know people and what they do because this will ultimately build a stronger foundation for the work to be done

Similarly, don’t make it all about you. People will ask you a lot of questions, but make sure you’re asking back. These connections will help you remember people more and not walk away on your first day overwhelmed with names. Personal connections make a difference.

 2. Learn what you can about the company

Prior to starting, do as much research as you can to learn more about the culture and what you should expect. Check social media, the website, and news articles to help form an idea about how it defines itself. Ask questions from your contact, like dress code and lunch information so you’ve covered some major first-day hurdles prior to starting.

 3. Don’t be afraid to say ‘hi’

You’re going to get introduced to a lot of people, but it doesn’t mean everyone. If there’s someone you haven’t met, don’t be afraid to say hi and introduce yourself. It might take you out of your comfort zone, but ultimately it will make you more comfortable in your new workplace and leave a positive first impression with your co-workers.

 4. Look for ways to help

First days notoriously lack structured work because you’re still learning everything. In between onboarding and training, see if there’s anyone in your department you can assist. By doing this, you set yourself up as a team player and keep yourself occupied.

5. Determine what success looks like

Ultimately, to be successful in the role you need to know what your supervisor is looking for. Take some time to talk to them daily to make sure you understand the expectations and are ready to do what it takes to succeed.
