Operating Machinery
Although dedicated machine operators will do most of the heavy machine work, general laborers are often called upon to help. Depending on the facility and specific industry, this could mean anything from hand tools to large industrial saws or mixers. But don’t worry. You’ll receive specific instructions and safety training before you begin.
Performing Basic Repairs
If you have a knack for understanding how things work, you’ll have a real leg up as a general laborer. Machines break down occasionally, and someone skilled at minor repairs can be highly valuable. Major repairs will typically be outsourced, but you can pick up some valuable knowledge and experience by establishing yourself as the go-to person for the basics.
Assisting with Processes
Light industrial is a broad field that incorporates lots of little day-to-day job tasks. As a general laborer, you might be asked to assist with any of them. This could mean loading materials into a machine, picking and packing items from a warehouse, or even performing quality control checks.
General Duties
General laborers are also expected to perform a variety of basic duties. Keeping the facility clean, organizing materials, and even sprucing things up by painting or planting flowers are just a few tasks you might perform. Some people are uncomfortable doing what they see as “grunt work,” but it’s a valuable opportunity to get to know the facility…and your coworkers.
What Do I Need to Succeed?
To excel as a general laborer, you need to be in excellent physical shape. You’ll spend the day on your feet, lifting and carrying various items. You also need a general aptitude for mechanics, though no formal training is required. In addition, you should be a bit of a jack of all trades—comfortable jumping in and helping no matter what the situation.
General labor can be an excellent way to get your foot in the door at any light industrial company. If you have some basic know-how, an eagerness to learn, and a willingness to work hard, it’s generally easy to move up.
