Don’t Stall Your Job Search During the Holidays

12.13.23 | Job Search

At first glance, the holiday season might seem like a terrible time to job hunt. The year is winding down; there are lots of parties and special events to attend, and it may seem that no one is in “work mode” at all. But if you’re in the market for a new job, this season offers some unique advantages. Here are a few reasons not to stall your job search during the holidays.

Decreased Competition

Most people aren’t job hunting during the holidays, and that’s a good thing! It means that you don’t have as much competition. Employers are more likely to take a closer look at your application and to move you on to the interview process, if they aren’t overwhelmed with applicants.

Heightened Employer Receptiveness

Hiring tends to ramp up in January. But by December, most employers already know their hiring needs and budgets for the year. In many cases, HR is eager to get the ball rolling. It only makes sense to submit your resume while they’re still optimistic and ready to go rather than waiting until they start getting burned out.

Networking Galore

Holiday parties and events can be a gold mine for job seekers, especially if you look for functions hosted by local business groups. Prepare a short elevator pitch, tuck a few copies of your resume into your bag, and show up ready to shine. Worst case scenario: you’ll have a good time and meet a few new people. Best case scenario: you’ll end up with a lead on the job of your dreams!

Temp-to-Hire Opportunities

The holidays are the busy season for many light industrial employers. Lots of warehouses, manufacturing facilities, and other companies bring on seasonal help to meet demand. This can be a great way to get your foot in the door, especially if you don’t have much experience. If you do an excellent job, you just might be able to convince your employer to bring you on permanently at the beginning of the year.
